Kelvinhaugh Street Student Accommodation

Glasgow

Situated in the vibrant Finnieston area of Glasgow, the development site represents a substantial length of street which historically never offered any built form. An existing sandstone retaining wall edged the site, which has been retained and incorporated into the landscaping proposals to interact with the street edge. The proposal addresses the street, the new on-site landscaped park by organising the accommodation blocks into ‘fingers’. This results in a series of gable ends terminate these ‘fingers’ and overlook the River Clyde and the south of Glasgow from an elevated position. The high-quality cladding changes colour from buff, to dark grey and then eventually to white as the layers of the facade are peeled back and revealed.

The scheme comprises of 603 student bedrooms in a mix of one and two person studio accommodation, self-contained with living space, cooking and en-suite facilities. Ica Interiors were engaged to develop the interior design alongside the development of the U-Pad accommodation standards. A number of high quality common areas provide meaningful amenity space to the residents. A games area, group study spaces, lounge spaces, bookable group dining rooms and a 1950s style Laundromat give a variety of opportunities for socialising in contemporary and comfortable surroundings. This is vital to creating a sense of community within the development and enhancing the student experience.
