Douglas House, Waterloo Street

Douglas House occupies a prominent position in the heart of Glasgow’s Financial Service District. The concrete frame building, originally an office, will be stripped back to its structure and fully refurbished into an Ibis Styles hotel. The existing cladding will be removed and replaced with a new curtain wall facade shedding its previous outdated 1960’s & 1980’s facades. The new cladding will significantly improve the buildings place in its context, vastly advancing the quality of the streetscape and the developing financial district’s modern aesthetic. New profiled Aluminium extrusions both horizontally and vertically provide a grid frame providing depth to the facade and conceptually connect to characteristic features of the city of Glasgow. This approach to the on-street elevation provides relief and contrast to the surrounding towering glass office blocks.

The hotel meets the street through a ground floor coffee shop activating the area at the foot of the building and serving the surrounding local business district. The bespoke interiors also by ICA will relate to the building and the city on a personal level, channeling local culture and comfort into the design of the internal furnishings.
